Sew Your Own Home Decor For a Personalized Touch

Author: Rick Young

There are two situations when you should think seriously about redecorating: when you've just moved into a new place and when you want to feel like you've just moved into a new place.

Whatever your circumstances, you can freshen up the look of any room with a few easy-to-sew items.

Window coverings, such as curtains or valances, have a dramatic effect and can be as quick to make as sewing a few straight seams. Decorative throw pillows can be made from simple squares that don't even require a pattern. With the right fabric, they give your existing furniture new life.

A tablecloth or table runner can do wonders to update your dining area. These accents can be classically basic or elegantly elaborate.

Ready-made home decorating items can be purchased inexpensively at discount stores, but you're limited to a few stock colors and patterns, and you know hundreds of people have exactly the same item. Sewing it yourself ensures you get a unique look, and you can choose from hundreds of options at the fabric store..

Cynthia Scott, educational coordinator for the Janome Sewing Machine Company, says beginning sewers can avoid frustration by choosing a reliable machine purchased from a local dealer.

"New machines are incredibly powerful, precise and worry-free," she says. "If it's been a few years since you've sewn or if you're brand-new to sewing, go to your local authorized independent dealer. You'll find a variety of machines at a good price and often will get in-depth lessons with your purchase."

There are many levels of machines. For example, Janome's Jem Platinum 720 is a starter machine. It's compact and light (just 12 pounds) with computerized control and 20 stitches.

The next step up is adding more decorative stitching and increasing the speed and size of your work area. The machine can make all the difference. The Janome Memory Craft 6600 Professional has the programmable features and tough quality necessary for a small sewing business.

Janome also offers software to create virtually any kind of embroidery design and layout. Simply transfer a stitch file to your Memory Craft 11000 and designs are stitched out automatically with professional results.
